The Port au Port Peninsula has two Wikipedia histories—and neither should be accepted without checking the receipts. The English page combines Breton, Basque, French, Mi’kmaq, and Acadian history with a dubious Thirty Years’ War claim, a spectacular but poorly defined oil estimate, stale Shoal Point promises, and a proposed hydrogen megaproject. The French page tells a different story, foregrounding Saint-Malo fishermen, the French Shore, Acadian settlement, and Francophone identity while quietly introducing its own unsupported medieval claims. This article audits both versions and asks why “time immemorial” demands evidence while “since the Middle Ages” is allowed to pass as history.
